Starting this Thursday, Port Olímpic is hosting the photography exhibition “Joan Andreu Puig Farran: la dècada convulsa (1929-1939)” by KBr Fundación MAPFRE. The exhibition, with free admission, is on display at Moll de Mestral and forms part of the collaboration agreement between BSM, Fundación MAPFRE and the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB) to bring photography and performing arts to the new Port Olímpic. The display features 22 selected photographs by Lleida-born photojournalist Puig Farran (Lleida, 1904 – Barcelona, 1982), drawn from the main exhibition currently on view at the KBr Fundación MAPFRE photography center until August 31. Puig Farran’s photographs offer a glimpse into a society marked by intense social and political upheaval. |

Joan Andreu Puig Farran: la dècada convulsa (1929-1939)
“Joan Andreu Puig Farran: la dècada convulsa (1929-1939)” is the first exhibition dedicated to the Lleida-born photographer who had been based in Barcelona since 1920.
|
Curated by Arnau Gonzàlez i Vilalta and Toni Monné Campañà, the exhibition consists of a selection of photographs printed specifically for this KBr Fundación MAPFRE exhibition from glass plate negatives preserved by the artist’s heirs, along with a large number of original prints held in the archives of La Vanguardia newspaper. It is further enriched by a selection of period publications that feature photographs by Puig Farran. A prominent photographer active in 1930s Catalonia, Joan Andreu Puig Farran (Lleida, 1904 – Barcelona, 1982) never exhibited his work during his lifetime, although his photographs were regularly published in magazines and newspapers. |
|
Starting in 1929, he worked as a photojournalist for several Catalan newspapers (La Humanitat, Esplai, El Matí, L’Opinió and La Vanguardia). When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he was sent to the fronts in Aragon and Mallorca. After the war, he went into exile in France. He returned to Barcelona in 1945 but was unable to resume his photojournalistic career and instead turned to advertising and tourism photography. He worked for brands such as Codorníu and Gallina Blanca and, together with his friend Antoni Campañà, created the well-known postcard label CYP.
